The surname Shao is derived from the Ji surname, and its ancestor is Ji Shi, the son of the King Wen of the Zhou Dynasty. Ji Shi was known as Shao Gong or Shao Bo because his fief was in Shao (today's southwest of Qishan, Shaanxi Province). He once assisted King Wu of Zhou in destroying the Shang Dynasty. During the reign of King Cheng of Zhou, he served as the Grand Tutor and was listed as one of the "Three Dukes" along with Duke Zhou Dan and Duke Jiang Shang. During the Pre-Qin period, the Shao surnamed people were mainly active in Henan and Shandong. After the Qin and Han Dynasties, they gradually spread to all parts of the country. Nowadays, Shandong Province has the largest population of people surnamed Shao.

The footsteps of the first to the fourth ancestors traced from Donggang to Ma Ling in Shaozi River. The ancestral grave at Ma Ling has stood tall for over two hundred years, which is seen as the blessing of the ancestors' virtuous deeds and good actions, as well as the filial piety of the later generations. The fourth ancestor moved to Nianpan Gou. The fifth ancestor, also known as the great ancestor Piyuan Gong, went to Tuanshanzi in his youth to start a new venture, thus forming the two branches of the Xiuyan Shao family in Tuanshanzi and Nianpan Gou.
